A recent press release from the Space Foundation announced that in a special recognition ceremony on August 26, Virginia Tech alumnus Dr. John Olver, of Blacksburg, was inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame at the ‘organization.
Olver (Environmental Engineering, ’75) is the Founder and CEO of Emisshield Inc., located in the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center in Blacksburg. The company manufactures and sells thermal protective coatings around the world. The coating was developed at NASA’s Ames Research Center in the early 1990s, and Emisshield, under Olver’s leadership, enabled space technology to be used in a wide variety of commercial, industrial and scientists.
Emisshield’s ability to adapt space technology for wider purposes meets the Space Foundation’s judgment criteria of “adapting space technologies to commercial products that improve our quality of life on Earth”.
As communities and regions across the United States focus on their technological ecosystems and innovative economies, we see in Olver and Emisshield what is possible – an idea developed through research and development, proven by market acceptance, followed by business creation and job creation.
