IIT-Roorkee Launches MDes, Masters in Innovation Management under New Design Department

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has established a New Design Department (DOD) under which IIT offers two new postgraduate programs: a Masters of Design (Industrial Design) and a Masters of Engineering Management ‘innovation. Admissions to new postgraduate courses will start from the next academic year 2021-22.

“The newly created department seeks to create, improve and disseminate knowledge in the field of design and innovation by instilling a culture of innovation and creative problem solving, as well as by providing training based on design to develop a systematic design practice, ”IIT-Roorkee said in an official statement.

The department will encourage and facilitate education, research and interdisciplinary entrepreneurial initiatives focused on design, says IIT. In addition, it would create a documentation and repository of design innovation practices that would act as a resource center containing comprehensive information and knowledge in the broad areas of industrial design and engineering management. innovation.

According to Professor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, Director of IIT Roorkee, “I am happy that our institute has created a new design department which will immediately start offering Mr. Des. and MIM programs. Today, innovation-driven design provides solutions to problems faced by industries and companies around the world. Early trends show that both programs have been warmly received by students across the country ”.

As part of the MDes course, IIT claims to train professionals capable of designing functional, aesthetic, usable and durable products. The program would expose students to the fundamentals of design and prototyping, conceptual thinking, product-human interface, materials and manufacturing, design methods, visual design, form studies, computer aided design and design for sustainability in accordance with the IIT.

As part of the Master’s program in Innovation Management, students will learn product innovation, service innovation, market and marketing innovation, organizational innovation, innovation and management of leadership process and innovation. The course emphasizes creative thinking and identifying and capitalizing on new opportunities associated with technology, the production of goods and services, and national and international markets, says IIT.
